Warden Service

As well as the specialised equipment used for measuring levels of ionizing radiation, computers are increasingly used for the collection and plotting of information gathered, though manual methods are also in place.

Graetz X50B dose rate meter.

This can be used to measure very low levels of Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation. It has a selection of probes for measuring different types and intensities of Radiation. It is powered by 2 AA type batteries.

ESS survey meter.

Used to measure higher levels of Gamma radiation. It gives a digital readout which ranges from .01 to 300 cGy/Hr. Being shockproof and water resistant as well as simple to use it is almost idiot-proof.

Personal dosimeter.

Gives a measurement of the cumulative dose of radiation to which the user has been exposed. It works by means of a quartz fibre which is deflected along a visible scale by ionisation inside the meter caused by radiation. The user can read it by looking through the end of it and reading from the scale. It is calibrated using a charger which passes an electric current through it. There are two versions in use with different scales, depending on the intensity of the radiation involved. They are manufactured by Landsverk.

The Nuclear, Biological, Chemical (NBC) suit.

Worn with the S10 respirator provides protection against some types of radiation as well as Chemical and Biological agents. It does not provide any significant protection against Gamma rays because of their penetration. Alpha particles however are the most harmful to the body if they get into the body through cuts or the respiratory system. Radioactive dust is always a hazard in a fallout situation, but the respirator prevents this from endangering the wearer unless it is giving off serious Gamma radiation. The suit can become very uncomfortable when worn over prolonged periods.

M65 Respirator .

Another respirator in use, of German design, similar to that used by the Defence Forces.
