Laois Civil Defence took part in the National Exercise this year in Co. Westmeath along with counties Wicklow, Sligo, Meath, Dublin, Kildare and Clare.

About 300 personnel took part in activities such as foot-drill, boating, fire-fighting, rescue and socialising.

Other agencies taking part included the Gardai (Underwater and Boat Unit), Westmeath Fire Service, Midland Health Board, Irish Wheelchair Association and the Defence Forces. The Coast Guard were planning to bring a helicopter, but weather conditions prevented this.

As well as exercises, workshops were provided by the Gardai (Body Recovery) and Health Board (Decontamination).
