Knot terms

Running End - The free end of a rope.

Standing Part - The part of a rope which is taking the load or is not in use.

All knots should also have a lock knot to help prevent them from opening (e.g. half hitch at running end)

Half Hitch

Used as a lock knot.

Thumb Knot.

Used as a stopper knot.

Single Figure of Eight.

Another stopper knot.

Double Figure of Eight

Used to make a loop.

Clove Hitch.

Bowline.

This knot is used to attach a rope to an object by means of a loop that does not tighten in on itself. It is also fairly easy to untie but holds securely where it should. If done incorrectly the knot will fall apart under tension. It is often taught using the "rabbit and tree" metaphor.
