For the general public one of the
more visible manifestations of Civil Defence is the
first aid and ambulance cover provided at large events
such as concerts, equestrian competitions. This however
is only a part of the casualty service of the Civil
Defence. All members are trained in first aid which
is an essential component of rescues, searches, stewarding,
firefighting and other duties. Others train more extensively
in areas such as basic life support and ambulance
procedures. First aid training is also provided to
the wider community by Civil Defence. In a major emergency
Civil Defence personnel and equipment would assist
Health Board ambulance services in the initial treatment
and transport to hospital of the injured.
Laois Civil Defence currently has
1 Nurse, 1EMT, 2 Trainee Nurses, 1 Advanced First
Aider, 1 EMFR (Emergency Medical First Responder)
and numerous First Aiders. No. 3 Base in Durrow is
currently running a First Aid Course to ensure all
members are at least to this level. Members are also
preparing to take Advanced First Aid exams in the
near future.
Laois Civil Defence operates a 1995
Volkswagen LT31 Wilker ambulance.
The ambulance is where possible stocked to HSE (Health
Service Executive) Ambulance Service standards. It
has recently gotten a face lift with the addition
of modern markings. (See Pic). The ambulance is backed
up by four-wheel drive vehicles which carry equipment
and personnel in off-road or mountainous conditions.
